Limassol Wine Festival – Celebration Of The Cyprus’ Viticulture

Limassol, the old wine-growing town of Cyprus rejoices in the rich viticulture of the country as the Limassol Wine Festival is held here every year. Rewards of the vineyards and wineries of the island are celebrated with great joy at the Municipal Gardens. This delectable feast of wine tasting and buffets receives more than 100,000 visitors annually.

It has been more than 6000 years that wine culture is celebrated in Cyprus. However, the enthusiasm of Cypriots seems to rise with every passing year than to fade away with time. Traditional pressing of grapes is probably the most entertaining and delightful sight to behold at this festival, as this also signifies the inception of festivities.

The Greek God of wine, Dionysus, is sure to approve of this annual merry making, which has now become an international festival, with people swarming the island to attend it from different parts of the world. Food, wine, music and dancing all set the mood to marvel the Cyprus’ history of the production of wine.

Minimal entry fee is charged by the visitors, which is nothing but the charge for an empty bottle or a wine glass, which is needed to taste wines anyway. As you enter the premises from the South Cyprus, music and fountains greet you in along with the famous traditionally-dressed status of the “Vraka Man” that welcomes you to the great Limassol Wine Festival. Taverna-style stalls and eateries are seen lined on both sides offering wide variety of wine and that too without charging a single penny from you.

History of the Ayia Napa Monastery-Cyprus

The history of the Ayia Napa Monastery-Cyprus is actually quite interesting. In 1,500, this sanctuary was constructed in honor of a Statue of Virgin Mary found here in about the 11th century. Both the story about the iconic statue and the building of this monastery is likely to keep you awake.

The Statue (Icon)

There are variations of this story, but one of them is set in about the 11th Century. During this time, a hunter was out with his dog and they were chasing a wild rabbit.

They could not catch this hare that suddenly and mysteriously disappeared. However, the dog continued to run after this animal. (After all, it is a hunting dog and that is what they do right?)
